The Santa Ana winds that have stoked hellacious wildfires in Ventura and Los Angeles counties will spread into San Diego County late tonight, creating an ‘’extreme’’ wildfire danger that will last through late Thursday.
During that period, “San Diego County will be the windiest place in Southern California,” says Stephen Harrison, a forecaster at the National Weather Service in Rancho Bernardo.
“The winds will start to pick up about 10 p.m. Wednesday, and will really get going at around sunrise on Thursday.”
Harrison said the winds could hit 80 to 90 mph on the mountain peaks in East County, and gust 35 to 45 mph, with occasional blasts of 55 mph, in places like Pine Valley, San Diego Estates, Julian, Campo and Alpine.
The winds also will gust 20 to 30 mph on Thursday along the coast, from roughly Point Loma to Camp Pendleton.
The county’s coastal region will remain under a red flag fire weather warning until 6 p.m. on Saturday, and a high wind warning will be in place for most of the rest of the county through late Friday afternoon.
Forecasters say that no significant rain is expected in San Diego County through mid-December.
